Camelot Group was awarded the National Lottery franchise in May 1994 and was re-awarded the franchise in 2001 and again in 2007. Camelot is committed to maximising returns to Good Causes by operating The National Lottery in a socially responsible way.

The Business Situation

The Camelot Group were looking to train and develop their first line managers. The performance of the people in the organisation is critical in delivering objectives and driving responsible growth. Achieving ongoing improvements in people performance depends on how well-equipped managers are to manage the people whose performance they are responsible for and how effectively managers can turn a group of individuals into a high performing team.

Camelot believe it’s important for staff to understand how their values work in practice and how they translated into the day-to-day behaviours exhibited in their work at Camelot.

The Approach

The ILM Certificate in First Line Management provided managers a foundation in management skills and underpinning knowledge as well as developing their confidence in managing people and resources effectively. The content of the programme was aligned to Camelot’s growth initiatives and their values and behaviours.

  • use a range of techniques that can be employed and adapted to meet the range of people management issues a line manager may need to address
  • analyse the key drivers of team performance and make plans to tackle problems and raise performance levels
  • implement plans for change effectively and measure the impact of changes to ensure continuous improvement
  • communicate confidently in a variety of business contexts in ways which help maximise performance
  • manage staff on a day-to-day basis, confident in how to approach problems with individuals and teams and able to maintain motivation levels and focus on the goals and objectives set
  • identify opportunities for developing the capabilities and competencies of individuals and the team and plan for these to be met by using a variety of learning opportunities and techniques
  • build effective relationships, both formal and informal with staff and others to ensure a positive and productive working environment is achieved
  • recognise own personal strengths and weaknesses as a line manager and learn from experience whilst planning personal development to improve own performance

I found the ILM course beneficial to my role here at Camelot, it gave me a lot to think about and stretched my mind. The support that I got from my tutor was immense and all of my colleagues found the same. Whilst there was a lot of work involved we were helped every step of the way. Everyone had our work roles to do on a day to day basis, but this was one of those courses that I actually enjoyed doing!
