1-Day Workshop


The performance of the people in a team or organisation is critical in delivering objectives and driving the competitive advantage. Achieving on-going improvements in people performance depends on how well equipped managers are to manage the people whose performance they are responsible for and how effectively managers can turn a group of individuals into a high performing team.
This programme provides managers a foundation in management skills and underpinning knowledge as well as developing their confidence in managing people and resources effectively.

Who is it for?

The course is for anyone who is required to step into a supervisory role on occasion as well as those aspiring Team Leaders who are considering stepping up into a leadership role.


By the end of this one-day programme delegates will:

  • Take on more responsibility and accountability for managing their staff
  • Have a greater understanding of the transition into a management role and the responsibilities that come with that role and how to lead a team
  • Be more efficient in problem solving and decision making
  • Have the confidence in using techniques to meet the range of people management issues a line manager may need to address
  • Be able to analyse the key drivers of team performance and make plans to tackle problems and raise performance levels
  • Manage staff on a day-to-day basis, confident in how to approach problems with individuals and teams and able to maintain motivation levels and focus on the goals and objectives set
  • Manage their time more efficiently

Programme Content

Session 1: Welcome and context

Session 2: People management accountabilities

Tutor input and discussion on what is meant be managing individuals and performance management: Looking at what is involved; what are the key elements.

This session will include input on strategies for identifying and implementing key management accountabilities including:

  • Authority and power
  • Responsibilities that come with the role of leader/manager
  • Empowerment
  • Delegation and time management

Session 3: Understanding and managing behaviour

This is an interactive session that includes trainer input on internal and external factors that influence behaviour in the workplace. This session will include:

  • Theories of motivation and their application to individuals
  • Problem solving and dealing with difficult people/situations.

Session 4: Managing performance

Trainer input on the performance cycle, the importance of monitoring and assessing the performance of individuals, providing development opportunities and giving support and feedback where necessary.

This session will look at clarifying the purpose, key success factors, individual objectives and performance measures that enable individuals to understand their role within the organisation. The session will also look at:

  • SMART objectives
  • KPIs
  • Goal setting

Session 5: Improving performance standards

  • Trainer input on strategies and practical measures for improving the performance of individuals including:
  • Managing the performance gap
  • Constructive conversations
  • Improvement planning
